It's no surprise to see established stars like George Clooney and Brad Pitt vying for the Best Actor trophy at the 84th Annual Academy Awards.Demian Bichir, however, is this year's dark horse. Though the 48-year-old actor may not yet be a household name in the United States, the Mexican star has been working steadily since the age of 14. "I'm overwhelmed for having my name among those incredible actors," Bichir, who stars in A Better Life, tells in a statement. "This could have never happened if Chris Weitz had not been the head of this film. He is my brother and I thank him deeply." |

Since mid-May, the United States has lived on borrowed time as Washington has debated multiple deficit-plans before the Aug 2 deadline. The Treasury Department, Washington D.C. Photo by Paulina Hermosillo mismo-mundo.com By Dan Steinbock BEIJING- (Xinhuanet)After last-minute twists and turns, a deal seemed to come together on Sunday evening, when lawmakers closed a $3-trillion deal, in order to raise the US borrowing limit by $1 trillion and to assure financial markets that Washington will avoid a default.
Despite all the hype and drama, the proposed plan is a fragile and minimal two-stage deal that will not satisfy most Republicans or Democrats. If successful, it will avoid a US default. But it is unlikely to avert the downgrading of US credit rating, which, in turn, would have an adverse impact on US recovery. |

DREAM Act testimony from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan |

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in advance of his DREAM Act testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, June 28: U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan “The DREAM Act is a common-sense piece of legislation that is in keeping with core American values. By creating opportunities for these bright and talented young people to attend college, not only will they have a chance to realize the American dream, but they will be able to strengthen the American economy and make our workforce stronger.
“The students of the DREAM Act are some of the country’s best and brightest, and it’s important to note that the process for legalization is by no means automatic. The DREAM Act would cover those young people who meet a number of high standards that demonstrate academic achievement and personal integrity, and who complete a rigorous, multiyear process. The DREAM Act would unleash the full potential of young people who live out values that all Americans cherish—a strong work ethic, service to others, and a deep loyalty to our country. |
