It's no surprise to see established stars like George Clooney and Brad Pitt vying for the Best Actor trophy at the 84th Annual Academy Awards.Demian Bichir, however, is this year's dark horse. Though the 48-year-old actor may not yet be a household name in the United States, the Mexican star has been working steadily since the age of 14.

"I'm overwhelmed for having my name among those incredible actors," Bichir, who stars in A Better Life, tells in a statement. "This could have never happened if Chris Weitz had not been the head of this film. He is my brother and I thank him deeply."

Border leaders have hailed an agreement signed in Mexico City that will allow long-haul Mexican trucks to distribute cargo throughout the United States and lift tariffs imposed by Mexico.

“This is certainly great news for our farmers and other business owners in the state of Texas and especially in the Rio Grande Valley,” said U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, D-Mercedes. “This agreement will keep our trade moving safely and create an economic boon with our nation’s third largest trading partner.”

El Gobierno de México, a través de la Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes, suscribió el pasado 7 de julio un Memorándum de Entendimiento con el Departamento de Transporte (DOT) de los Estados Unidos, luego de que los Presidentes de ambos países alcanzaron una solución sobre el diferendo de autotransporte transfronterizo de carga, el pasado 3 de marzo.

La firma de este acuerdo permitirá a los transportistas de México y Estados Unidos circular de manera permanente en ambos países, al incorporarse a un nuevo programa, en tanto cumplan con reglas similares de seguridad vial.Los transportistas de carga mexicanos interesados en participar contarán con la certidumbre jurídica de que al cumplir con los requisitos establecidos podrán obtener y mantener la autorización permanente para operar conforme a las mismas reglas que los transportistas de Estados Unidos.

United States and Mexico Agreements Will Lift Tariffs and Put Safety First

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes Dionisio Arturo Pèrez-Jàcome Friscione joined today in Mexico City to sign agreements resolving the dispute over long-haul, cross-border trucking services between the United States and Mexico.

The new program puts safety first and paves the way for Mexico to lift tariffs it imposed more than two years ago. Pursuant to an agreement signed by the United States Trade Representative and the Secretaría de Economía of the United Mexican States, Mexico will soon lift retaliatory tariffs on more than $2 billion in U.S. manufactured goods and agricultural products, providing opportunities to increase U.S. exports to Mexico and expanding job creation in the U.S. The agreement also provides that Mexico will suspend 50 percent of the retaliatory tariffs within ten days.

By Cecilia Sanchez in Mexico City June 23, 2011. A.P. Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday met face-to-face with activist-poet Javier Sicilia in a long and often colorful public meeting aimed at reaching a consensus on how to curb the country's rising drug-war death toll.

Sicilia demanded Calderon apologize for carnage that has left an estimated 40,000 dead, and demanded a change in the government's anti-crime strategy. But Calderon, flanked by Cabinet officials, repeated once more that it would be wrong to alter the basic thrust — a military-led campaign against the country's powerful cartels.

gana; yo también soy de mecha corta, pero no caí en la provocación; el que manoteó fue Calderón; aceptó cargar las culpas y su costo moral, tendrá que asumir su consecuencia jurídica y, cedimos el lugar pero ganamos voz y presencia públicas.

Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that was narrowly passed by state lawmakers Friday, handing activists a breakthrough victory in the state where the gay rights movement was born.New York becomes the sixth state where gay couples can wed and the biggest by far.

"We are leaders and we join other proud states that recognize our families and the battle will now go on in other states," said Sen. Thomas Duane, a Democrat.Gay rights advocates are hoping the vote will galvanize the movement around the country and help it regain momentum after an almost identical bill was defeated here in 2009 and similar measures failed in 2010 in New Jersey and this year in Maryland and Rhode Island.
