Donovan injury-time goal puts US in 2nd round

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) Landon Donovan scored a stunning goal in the first minute of injury time, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria.

With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination Wednesday, Donovan brought the ball upfield on a counterattack and Jozy Altidore's shot on the breakaway was tipped by Clint Dempsey into goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. The rebound went to Donovan, who kicked it in from about 8 yards for one of the biggest goals in U.S. soccer history.

"I've been through a lot in the last four years," Donovan said half an hour after the end, crying and his voice cracked. "I'm so glad it culminated this way. When you try to do things the right way, it's good to get rewarded."While he was speaking underneath the stands in the interview room, American fans were still in the stadium, waving flags and blowing vuvuzelas in celebration.

A first-half goal from Luis Suarez was enough to help Uruguay secure top spot in Group A and progress into the last 16 of the World Cup after a close victory over Mexico, who also qualified.

The only goal came two minutes before half-time when Edinson Cavani's superbly floated cross allowed the Ajax striker to head in at the back post.With hosts South Africa unable to alter the goal difference too much in their 2-1 win over France, the result in Rustenburg also put the nervous Mexicans through.

Their coach Javier Aguirre made two changes to his line-up, bringing in veteran Cuauhtemoc Blanco for his first start in place of the injured Carlos Vela up front, while Andres Guardado was in for the suspended Efrain Juarez.Uruguay also made one surprise change, with Diego Godin dropping to bench in place of Mauricio Victorino.

De esta manera, salvo un resultado catastrófico de la Selección Argentina, los mexicanos serán los rivales en octavos.

Será México, nomás. Es que Uruguay dejó una imagen de equipo práctico y utilitario y consiguió un 1-0 sobre los aztecas que le bastó para evitar a Argentina en octavos (si es que la Selección gana su grupo) y para obligar justamente a su vencido a cruzarse, como en el Mundial anterior, con la Selección que ahora dirige Maradona. Sin goles en contra en tres partidos, los de Tabárez avanzan en silencio y tienen un camino bastante despejado hasta cuartos de final.

World Cup 2010 Mexico next plays Uruguay, which also needs a draw to advance.

POLOKWANE, South Africa -- Substitutes Javier Hernandez and Cuauhtemoc Blanco each scored in Mexico's 2-0 win over France at the World Cup on Thursday, leaving Mexico needing only a draw to reach the next round.

Hernandez, nicknamed "Chicharito (Little Green Pea)," ran onto Rafael Marquez's pass as the France defense stopped, believing Hernandez was offside. He dribbled around goalkeeper Hugo Lloris before guiding the ball home in the 64th minute.

Hernandez's grandfather, Tomas Balcazar, scored for Mexico against France in the 1954 World Cup.
Blanco put in a penalty kick in the 79th minute after Eric Abidal fouled another substitute, Pablo Barrera.

Francia es de alguna manera la malquerida del Mundial de Sudáfrica. A cada partido le recuerdan que si está en la Copa del Mundo es por una mano de Henry. Ayer, por ejemplo, en Polokwane, apareció un seguidor que se paseó por la cancha un rótulo en el que se leía "Handy Henry" mientras ondeaban banderas con el nombre de "Eire, la selección eliminada". Una hora y media después, la finalista del pasado Mundial de Alemania, derrotada por Italia después de un cabezazo de Zidane a Materazzi, estaba prácticamente fuera del torneo. A Francia difícilmente le puede aguardar nada bueno en África. A México y Uruguay les alcanza con empatar en la última jornada para firmar el adiós a los bleu, y los franceses no están precisamente en condiciones de reclamar juego limpio. Así funciona el fútbol.

México ganó ayer a Francia con todas las de la ley, por más que se pueda discutir el gol de Chicharito Hernández, hijo de la mítica dinastía Chicharo, la nueva perla del fútbol mexicano, jugador ya del Manchester United. Javier Hernández atrapó en posición dudosa un pase interior de Márquez, regateó a Lloris y puso el balón en la red de Francia. El nieto imitó al abuelo porque la historia dice que Chicharo también le marcó un gol a Francia en el Mundial ?ayer México ganó por primera vez a los franceses?. La sentencia llegó poco después con un penalti bien tonto de Abidal a Barrera que transformó el veterano Blanco. Jóvenes como Hernández, Vela y Giovani, y veteranos de la talla de Blanco, mezclaron estupendamente en México ante una confusa Francia, víctima de sus cuitas y del astrólogo Domenech.

Drogba desperate to leave his mark

One subject that continues to crop up between football supporters everywhere is who stands out as the finest African player of all time. George Weah and Roger Milla clearly deserve consideration, as do the likes of Abedi Pele and Larbi Bebarek, but in a few years' time the figure of Didier Drogba could well be towering above all others. Since exploding onto the scene fairly late in his career, the Côte d'Ivoire international has continued to hit new heights, leaving an ever stronger imprint on the African game.

It was at Marseille that he first forged a serious reputation and though he only stayed for one season, he will always have a place in the hearts of the Stade Velodrome faithful. His exceptional 2003/04 campaign left many lasting memories and attracted interest from Europe's most illustrious teams, with Chelsea ultimately proving his next port of call. Once installed in west London, Drogba quickly began setting records and stockpiling winners' medals: two English Premier League titles, league top scorer in 2006/07, Chelsea's all-time leading scorer in Europe and African Footballer of the Year in 2006. The 31-year-old was also captain of the first Ivorian side to compete at a FIFA World Cup™ finals and, as if that was not enough, he also registered their first goal in the competition.

More than just a great player, the Elephants striker is also a very worthy human being, for whom the fight against discrimination and the struggle for national reconciliation in his homeland are every bit as important as the goals he scores. This Saturday, within the broader framework of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, he made his way to Johannesburg as ambassador for the Youth African Soccer Cup, a tournament devised to open young minds in South African townships to the battle against xenophobiaIt was there, surrounded by children in his native Africa, that the celebrated marksman chatted with the press of FIFA

You are here as an ambassador for the Youth African Soccer Cup, an initiative launched to tackle xenophobia. What does this event mean to you and what has your experience as an ambassador been like?

Didier Drogba: What these children are doing is extraordinary - studying and representing another country. Aside from the football, it's through knowing about others and studying that they'll succeed in changing attitudes. I would obviously have liked to have played and spent more time with them, but there was a huge amount of people and we had a schedule to respect.

What advice did you give the children upon meeting them in this special context?

I'm very proud of them and I want to encourage them to continue down this path. It's important they continue to learn and that they get their friends to do the same. These children need to become the motor in the struggle against discrimination. Instead of seeing people continue to fall victim to xenophobia, we need to turn things on their head and attack the phenomenon head-on. The best way to carry out that fight is by making sure these children receive an education. With more knowledge, they'll understand things like respect, friendship and community more easily.

You seem to be in your element here, among people who are warm, smiling and enthusiastic despite their problems and the sometimes difficult conditions they live in.

Those are just simple things that I'm used to. We're in a world where the stakes and demands are high at every level, and sometimes we get caught up in all that despite ourselves. That's why an event like this which involves children helps us get back to what's important, back to our values and back to simple things.

Your stay in South Africa coincided with the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. What did you make of the tournament?

I followed the competition with interest and I found the level of play to be very good. I really enjoyed what the United States achieved: they were a team no one was expecting much from but they created an upset and found themselves in the final after beating the best team in Europe. Hats off to them!

What did you make of the welcome and atmosphere South Africa provided over the course of the tournament?

The organisation is superb. And in the stadiums, even if it's a bit chilly, you very quickly forget the winter coolness. The atmosphere is magnificent, people sing together and they're happy and welcoming. It's been a very good rehearsal for the 2010 World Cup.

Indeed, you must be hoping to return here next year. Côte d'Ivoire have started well in Group E of the African qualifiers with three wins from three games, but can things still go wrong?

We're on the right track, but everything can change very quickly and there's nothing stopping us from ending up with a completely different set of results in the second half of the campaign. However, we now have enough experience to manage this situation and get the one or two victories which would open the doors to the 2010 World Cup for us.

In Côte d'Ivoire's first FIFA World Cup finals in 2006, you were eliminated at the group stage after being drawn in a tough section with Argentina, the Netherlands, and Serbia and Montenegro. What has changed in the last three years and are you better equipped to reach the knockout phase?

Even though the draw was harsh, we still managed to take something positive out of it all. Firstly, we saw we were able to score against the big teams [Côte d'Ivoire lost 2-1 to both Argentina and the Netherlands] and secondly we picked up Ivorian football's very first World Cup win [3-2 against Serbia and Montenegro]. I hope that victory will lead to others because we'll be coming back here with lots more experience and a past in the competition. It'll be easier since we'll be less naïve and feel less like spectators. We spent a lot of time watching our opponents and that maybe cost us a place in the Round of 16.

As the successor to Henri Michel, Gerard Gili and Uli Stielike, what has Vahid Halilhodzic done for the team? His approach seemed incompatible at first and yet he now looks to have been the ideal appointment.

He's been able to adapt to the demands of African football, and Ivorian football in particular. He's moderated his approach and, above all, he's come across a group of players who are ready to listen and want to progress and succeed. Those two things together have produced the good results we're getting at the moment. My ambition is for myself and my colleagues to leave our mark on the history of Ivorian football. We've already played in a World Cup and that's a good thing. Since Germany, we've realised our weaknesses, but also what our strengths are. Now we want to appear in a second consecutive edition and, above all, do better than in 2006.

What does it mean to you and to the continent in general that the FIFA World Cup will be held in Africa for the first time?

It's a chance for the African continent to show another side of itself to the one people usually see, by which I mean war or poverty. It's a chance to prove that we're capable of bringing joy and happiness to the whole world. And, above all, that we're capable of organising an event as important as the World Cup, because the goal is that there'll be others to follow it.

Should you qualify, it could be your last FIFA World Cup as you will be 32 next summer. On the other hand, age seems to have no impact on your performances. You still look to be as clinical and motivated as ever.

Aside from the pleasure of representing my country, the one thing that carries me forward is the joy of playing. I wasn't lucky enough to start out at the highest level early on. Unlike most players, I didn't follow the classic route of going to an academy and I reached the top level late, at around 25 or 26. The only thing you tell yourself in that situation is that you're lucky to have made it at all and that you need to make the most of each match and every second spent on the pitch.

Pero quizás dentro de unos años Didier Drogba ponga a todo el mundo de acuerdo. Desde su tardía irrupción en la elite, el marfilense no deja de progresar e imprimir su sello sobre la historia del deporte rey en el continente primigenio.

Se dio a conocer ante el gran público en el Olympique de Marsella, donde sólo estuvo una temporada, aunque permanecerá por siempre en el corazón de los seguidores del club provenzal. Una excepcional campaña de 2003/04 fue suficiente para inscribir su nombre en los anales del club y suscitar el interés de los grandes de Europa. Al año siguiente fichó por el Chelsea, y comenzó a escribir las primeras páginas de su libro de récords. Dos veces campeón de Inglaterra, máximo goleador de la Premier League (2006/07), máximo goleador de la historia de los Blues en la Liga de Campeones y Balón de Oro africano (2006), Drogba es también el capitán de la primera selección marfilense que disputó una Copa Mundial de la FIFA. Por si esto no bastase, firmó el primer tanto de la historia del país en el torneo...

Además de un gran jugador, el estandarte de los Elefantes es un gran hombre, para quien combatir las discriminaciones o luchar por la reconciliación nacional en Costa de Marfil es algo tan importante como marcar goles. Este sábado 27 de junio, en Johannesburgo, en el marco de la Copa FIFA Confederaciones 2009, se convirtió en embajador de la Youth African Soccer Cup, un certamen destinado a sensibilizar a los niños de los distritos sudafricanos sobre la lucha contra la xenofobia

En su África natal, y rodeado de niños, el marfilense ha concedido una entrevista en la FIFA

Está usted en Johannesburgo en calidad de embajador de la Youth African Soccer Cup, una iniciativa para luchar contra la xenofobia. ¿Qué le inspira este acontecimiento, y cómo lo ha vivido siendo embajador suyo?

Es extraordinario lo que están haciendo estos niños, estudiar a otro país y representarlo. Van a conseguir cambiar las mentalidades, además de mediante el fútbol, a través del conocimiento del prójimo y de los estudios. Me habría gustado jugar y pasar más tiempo con ellos, por supuesto, pero había muchísima gente y teníamos un programa que respetar.

Al encontrarse con estos niños, y en este cuadro particular, ¿qué consejos les ha dado?

Me siento muy orgulloso de ellos, y quiero animarlos a que sigan por este camino. Es importante que continúen aprendiendo, y que inviten a sus amigos a hacer lo mismo. Estos niños deben convertirse en el motor de la lucha contra las discriminaciones. En lugar de ver cómo la gente sigue siendo víctima de la xenofobia, hay que invertir las cosas y atacar a la xenofobia. La mejor forma de llevar a cabo este combate es que los niños reciban una educación. Con mayores conocimientos, pueden comprender de manera más fácil lo que son el respeto, la amistad, la comunidad.

Usted parece estar aquí en su elemento, entre gente calurosa, sonriente y entusiasta, pese a los problemas y las condiciones en que viven, a veces difíciles...

Son cosas sencillas, a las que estoy acostumbrado. Vivimos en un mundo en el que hay muchos retos y exigencias a todos los niveles, y a menudo entramos en este juego a nuestro pesar. Por eso este tipo de actos con los niños nos permiten regresar a la base, a nuestros valores, a cosas simples.

Su estadía en Sudáfrica ha coincidido con la Copa FIFA Confederaciones 2009. ¿Qué le ha parecido el torneo?

Lo he seguido con interés, y me ha parecido que había un nivel muy bueno. Me gustó mucho la trayectoria de Estados Unidos, un equipo al que no se esperaba, que dio la sorpresa y entró en la final tras ganar a la mejor selección de Europa. ¡Enhorabuena!

¿Qué piensa de la recepción y del ambiente que ha proporcionado Sudáfrica en esta prueba?

La organización es magnífica. Y en los estadios, aunque hacía algo de fresco, se olvida muy rápido la temperatura del invierno. El ambiente es estupendo, la gente canta unida, está alegre y es afectuosa. Es un ensayo muy positivo para el Mundial de 2010.

Precisamente, sin duda usted espera regresar el año que viene. Costa de Marfil ha empezado con buen pie en el Grupo E de la competición preliminar de la zona africana, con tres victorias en otros tantos partidos. ¿Qué podría impedirles hacer el viaje?

Estamos en el buen camino, pero todo puede sucederse con mucha rapidez, y no nos encontramos a salvo de una trayectoria totalmente distinta en la segunda vuelta. Pero, a día de hoy, tenemos experiencia suficiente para gestionar esta situación y conseguir uno o dos triunfos que nos abrirían las puertas del Mundial de 2010.

En la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2006, la primera de la historia de Costa de Marfil, ustedes cayeron eliminados en la primera ronda de un grupo complicado, con Argentina, Holanda y Serbia y Montenegro. ¿Qué ha cambiado en tres años que podría permitirles superar esa primera fase?

Aunque el sorteo fue difícil, a pesar de todo sacamos algo positivo. En primer lugar, que fuimos capaces de marcar frente a los grandes equipos [1-2 contra Argentina y Holanda] y que conseguimos la primera victoria del fútbol marfilense en el Mundial [3-2 ante Serbia y Montenegro]. Espero que ese triunfo traiga otros, porque vamos a regresar con mucha más experiencia y tras haber jugado ya un torneo. Va a ser más fácil, porque seremos menos ingenuos y menos espectadores. Miramos mucho a nuestros adversarios, y quizás eso nos costó un puesto en octavos de final.

Después de Henri Michel, Gérard Gili o Uli Stielike, ¿qué aporta Vahid Halilhodžić a la selección? Parecía una mezcla incompatible, pero aun así ahora todo indica que es el hombre ideal para este cargo.

Ha sabido adaptarse a las exigencias del fútbol africano en general, y marfilense en particular. Ha modulado sus esquemas y, sobre todo, se ha encontrado con un grupo de jugadores dispuestos a escuchar, que tienen ganas de progresar y de triunfar. Los dos juntos producen los buenos resultados que estamos cosechando en estos momentos. Mi ambición consiste en marcar la historia del fútbol marfilense con mis compañeros. Hemos disputado un Mundial, eso ya está bien. Desde entonces, hemos tomado conciencia de nuestros defectos, pero también de nuestras capacidades. Ahora queremos participar en un segundo Mundial consecutivo, y sobre todo hacerlo mejor que en 2006.

El hecho de que la Copa Mundial de la FIFA se celebre por primera vez en África, ¿qué representa para usted, y para el continente en general?

Para el continente africano supone la oportunidad de enseñar otra imagen, distinta a la que estamos acostumbrados a ver, es decir, la guerra o la pobreza. Es una oportunidad de demostrar que somos capaces de llevar alegría y felicidad al mundo entero. Y, sobre todo, que somos capaces de organizar un acontecimiento tan importante como el Mundial. Porque el objetivo es que en el futuro haya otros.

El año que viene usted tendrá 32 años, de modo que si se clasifican puede que sea su última Copa Mundial de la FIFA. Por otro lado, da la impresión de que la edad no afecta a su rendimiento. Muestra la misma eficacia y motivación que siempre...

Además del orgullo de representar a mi país, lo único que me hace avanzar es el placer de jugar. No tuve la suerte de empezar pronto en un alto nivel. Al contrario que la mayoría de los jugadores, no seguí el clásico trayecto de los centros de formación y llegué tarde al alto nivel, sobre los 25-26 años. Lo único que se dice en estos casos es que por lo menos hay suerte de haber llegado, y que hay que aprovechar todos los partidos y los minutos que se pasan dentro del campo.
