Lukánikos o Kanelos, perro griego manifestante
Written by Mismo-Mundo.com

El perro "antisistema"

 Sample Image

Protest pooch becomes icon of Greek solidarity
Written by Mismo-Mundo.com

A Stray dog is making a name for himself as an underground hero, turning up to at least 10 riots in Greece since 2008

Revolutionary-era Americans had the "Join or Die" snake. Iran's green revolution rallied around the death of Neda Agha-Soltan. Ukraine's orange revolution exploded after the poisoning of Victor Yushchenko.

In a Greece struggling amidst the throes of draconian, IMF-led budgetary cutbacks, another symbol of revolution is rising. They call him either "Riot-Dog" or "Rebel-Dog", depending on the source.

With a national debt topping 300 billion Euros, a looming EU-IMF bailout at $140 billion or more and frequent rioting over the country's agreement to a massive austerity plan, the pooch seems to be gaining traction among protesters as an image of solidarity.

The canine's real name is Kanellos and, according to published accounts, he's acquired quite a taste for civil unrest, having made an appearance at virtually every major Greek protest and riot over the last two years.

MOSCOW, May 9, 2010 (AFP) - Troops from four NATO states marched through Red Square for the first time Sunday asRussia marked victory in World War II with its biggest military parade since the collapse of the Soviet Union. In a moment of huge symbolism, soldiers from Britain, France, Poland and the United States paraded on the Moscow square’s famous cobbles along with nuclear-capable missiles that once would have been aimed at Western states.

Britain and the United States were the key allies of the Soviet Union in World War II but became bitter postwarfoes. France and Poland were occupied by the Nazis but their exiled troops played a major role in the Allied effort.

"Sixty-five years ago, Nazism was defeated and a machine that was exterminating whole peoples was halted,"President Dmitry Medvedev said in a speech at the parade. Two dozen world leaders attended the parade for the 65th anniversary of the victory, including Chinese President Hu Jintao, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of state of almost all the ex-Soviet nations.

Save the Children's State of the World's Mothers Report 2010 Shows Norway Tops the List, Afghanistan Ranks Last, U.S. Falls to 28th, Behind Many Other Wealthy Nations

 Sample Image

WESTPORT, Conn. ( May 4, 2010) — Mothers in Norway and Australia are living in the best places in the world, according to Save the Children's 11th annual "Mothers' Index," which ranks the best and worst places to be a mother.  Afghanistan ranked at the bottom of the list of 160 countries, which included 43 developed nations and 117 in the developing world.

The "Mothers' Index" is highlighted in Save the Children's State of the World's Mothers 2010 report, which examines the many ways women working on the front lines of health care are helping to save the lives of mothers, newborns and young children, and makes an urgent call to increase the number of front-line health workers in the world's poorest nations.

The Index is based on an analysis of indicators of women's and children's health and well-being, and clearly illustrates that providing mothers with access to education, economic opportunities and maternal and child health care gives mothers and their children the best chance to survive and thrive.

Obama, China discuss Iran at nuclear summit
Written by Mismo-Mundo.com

50 countries aimed at finding ways to prevent terrorists from getting their hands on nuclear material.

 Sample Image

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama's drive for tougher sanctions on Iran picked up momentum in talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao that also focused on their countries' fractious economic relationship.
Their 90-minute encounter came at the start of a two-day nuclear security summit of nearly 50 countries aimed at finding ways to prevent terrorists from getting their hands on weapons-grade nuclear material.

Ukraine provided the first example by agreeing to give up its highly enriched uranium.

Iran's nuclear program, which the West fears is a cover to build an atomic bomb, is not on the agenda of the summit, but the presence of so many world leaders in one place gave Obama an opportunity to again make his case for fresh sanctions to be imposed on Tehran over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment.

Pope skirts paedophile scandal as Christians mark Easter

VATICAN CITY (AFP) – Pope Benedict XVI kept silent on the paedophilia scandal rocking the Roman Catholic Church during Easter Sunday addresses as Christians across the world marked the resurrection of Christ.
The leader of the world's one billion Catholics condemned the persecution of Christian minorities in Iraq and Pakistan, but failed to mention escalating allegations of decades of child abuse by the Church's priests.

The dean of the College of Cardinals however rallied around the embattled head of the Roman Catholic Church, telling him in a rain-drenched St Peter's Square: "The people of God are with you and do not allow themselves to be impressed by the idle chatter of the moment."
