“An extraordinary law … requires extraordinary action.” ABA. Carolyn Lamm PRESIDENT, AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION 2009 - 2010 Photo Stetson Law WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American Bar Association today filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging the federal district court in Arizona to bar enforcement of the state’s recently enacted law authorizing police to stop individuals who they suspect are in the United States illegally and to detain them if they are unable to produce proof of citizenship or legal immigration status. ABA President Carolyn B. Lamm said it is “extraordinary” for the association to file an amicus brief in a case at the district court level, rather than waiting for it to reach an appellate court, but “an extraordinary law … requires extraordinary action.” She vowed the association will “oppose, very strongly, any incursion on equal protrection [or] substantive due process, by such things as racial profiling and segmenting groups out.” The law runs afoul of fundamental ABA positions opposing racial profiling and supporting federal preemption of immigration law, she added. |

Short, Tense Deliberation, Then a General Is Gone |

By the time he woke up Wednesday morning, President Obama had made up his mind.At War By MARK LANDLER Published by New York Times: June 23, 2010 During the 36 frenetic hours since he had been handed an article from the coming issue of Rolling Stone ominously headlined “The Runaway General,” the president weighed the consequences of cashiering Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, whose contemptuous comments about senior officials had ignited a firestorm.
Mr. Obama, aides say, consulted with advisers — some, like Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who warned of the dangers of replacing him, others, like his political advisers, who thought he had to go. He reached out for advice to a soldier-statesman, retired Gen. Colin L. Powell. He identified a possible successor to lead the war in Afghanistan. And then, finally he ended General McChrystal’s command in a meeting that lasted only 20 minutes. According to one aide, the general apologized, offered his resignation and did not beg for his job. After a see-saw debate among White House officials, “there was a basic meeting of the minds,” said Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff and a major player in the deliberations. “This was not good for the mission, the military and morale.” |

Republicanos intentan controlar daño a imagen tras disculpa ofrecida a BP

Calderon described efforts to fight organized crime in Mexico. Double click this picture to link and watch video In a speech to a joint session of Congress, Calderon described efforts to fight organized crime in Mexico, where 23,000 people have been killed in drug violence since he came to power in late 2006 and launched an army offensive. Washington is also aiding Mexico's battle against drug gangs with a 2007 pledge of $1.4 billion for equipment and police training to help fight the cartels that ship some $40 billion worth of illegal drugs north each year.
The drug violence has become a major political test for Calderon and a growing worry for Washington and foreign investors as violence has spread across the southwest border. "There is one issue where Mexico needs your cooperation. And that is stopping the flow of assault weapons and other deadly arms across the border," Calderon said to a standing ovation from U.S. lawmakers.
Calderon said the increase in violence in Mexico had coincided with the 2004 lifting of a U.S. assault weapons ban. |

Arizona's immigration crackdown |

The backlash begins: A new state law has galvanised Latinos nationwide, and others too From The Economist print edition ANTONIO GONZALEZ is, ironically enough, delighted with Arizona’s new law against illegal immigration. He is president of the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP), which works to mobilise American Latinos as a political force. Its motto is su voto es su voz, your vote is your voice. The Latino movement usually grows by spurts in response to xenophobic overreactions by conservative America, and the Arizona law may be the biggest overreaction yet, according to Mr Gonzalez. It has “done more to organise our community than we could have done” and made it “the most vibrant social movement in America today, 100 times larger than the tea-party movement.”
Arizona’s law, signed on April 23rd, makes illegal immigration a state misdemeanour in addition to a federal civil violation. It also requires local police, after making a “lawful contact”, to check the immigration status of people who cause “reasonable suspicion”, and to arrest them if they lack documents. To Mr Gonzalez the phrases “lawful contact” and “reasonable suspicion” allow cops selectively to pull over Hispanic-looking drivers like him on the pretext of a scratched windscreen or other trifle. The deputies of Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix, the state capital, are already notorious for doing this sort of thing, and the law would require cops to do it statewide.

The New Demography of American Motherhood by Gretchen Livingston and D’Vera Cohn, Pew Research Center Executive Summary This report examines the changing demographic characteristics of U.S. mothers by comparing women who gave birth in 2008 with those who gave birth in 1990. It is based on data from the National Center for Health Statistics and the Census Bureau. It also presents results of a nationwide Pew Research Center survey that asked a range of questions about parenthood. Among the key findings of this report: * Age: Mothers of newborns are older now than their counterparts were two decades ago. In 1990, teens had a higher share of all births (13%) than did women ages 35 and older (9%). In 2008, the reverse was true -- 10% of births were to teens, compared with 14% to women ages 35 and older. Each race and ethnic group had a higher share of mothers of newborns in 2008 who are ages 35 and older, and a lower share who are teens, than in 1990. * Marital Status: A record four-in-ten births (41%) were to unmarried women in 2008, including most births to women in their early 20s. In 1990, 28% of births were to unmarried women. The unmarried-mother share of births has increased most sharply for whites and Hispanics, although the highest share is for black women. * Race and Ethnicity: White women made up 53% of mothers of newborns in 2008, down from 65% in 1990. The share of births to Hispanic women has grown dramatically, to one-in-four. * Education: Most mothers of newborns (54%) had at least some college education in 2006, an increase from 41% in 1990. Among mothers of newborns who were ages 35 and older, 71% had at least some college education. * Explaining the Trends: All the trends cited above reflect a complex mix of demographic and behavioral factors. For example, the higher share of college-educated mothers stems both from their rising birth rates and from women's increasing educational attainment. The rise in births to unmarried women reflects both their rising birth rates and the shrinking share of adults who are married. * Attitudes about Parenthood: When asked why they decided to have their first (or only) child, the overwhelming majority of parents (87%) answer, "The joy of having children." But nearly half (47%) also say, "There wasn't a reason; it just happened." |
