Written by Mismo-Mundo.com
Thursday, 20 May 2010

Oregon voters stood by their lawmakers in Tuesday's primary election, lifting state senators and representatives past challengers throughout the state.

Former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber easily ousted Secretary of State Bill Bradbury in the Democratic primary, 66 percent to 29 percent. Political newcomer and former Portland Trail Blazer Chris Dudley won a tighter Republican primary against Allen Alley, leading by 8 percentage points in late returns.

Mr. Kitzhaber is a former two-term governor, state Senate president. Mr. Dudley is a 15-year veteran of the National Basketball Association who has proven his ability to raise funds and fight campaign battles.

Now politicos will focus on the November election, in which Mr. Kitzhaber will attempt to win an  unprecedented third term as governor, while Mr. Dudley attempts to hold the seat without any prior political experience.

Meyers and Orozco said this specific bill HB 2281, started as a reaction to the Mexican-American Studies Department. The researchers said that Raza Studies students graduate at rates that are higher than their peers.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A new Arizona law targeting ethnic studies classes could negatively affect students’ academic achievement and reverse academic gains made over the last several years, according to two Oregon State University researchers.

Susan Meyers, assistant professor and director of writing in the English department at OSU, and Rick Orozco, an assistant professor in the College of Education at OSU, both earned their Ph.D.s at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. and are intimately familiar with the program that spurred the new law in Arizona.

The bill, HB 2281, prevents “. . . courses or classes that either: 1) are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group, or 2) advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.”
The types of courses that this bill targets are known as ethnic studies courses, a field of study that is commonly offered on many university campuses, including OSU, as well as on increasing numbers of high school campuses.Meyers and Orozco said this specific bill started as a reaction to the Mexican-American Studies Department, also known informally as Raza Studies, in the Tucson Unified School District.

Sarah Palin will visit Eugene
Written by Mismo-Mundo.com
Thursday, 22 April 2010

Sarah Palin will visit Eugene April 23 to speak at the Lane County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day fundraiser.

 Sample Image
Bill Young, the party’s Lane County chairman, told The Register-Guard that the fundraiser is typically held near Lincoln’s birthday in February but the date was changed to accommodate Palin’s schedule. Local Republican Party leaders have been working with Palin’s handlers for nearly a year in an effort to bring her to Eugene.

The room reserved at the Hilton Eugene has capacity for 750. Lane County Republicans will get first crack at attending and, if there is still space remaining, the invitation will be extended to Republicans in neighboring counties or the rest of the state.
